2020 came with quite a few life changes. And due to some of those changes I spent the majority of 2020 living in a van. Don’t judge me, fully by choice and it’s way more fun than its sounds ; ) When it finally got cold enough to motivate a move into an apartment, I needed a bed. I hate buying poorly made cheap furniture that makes a bunch of unnecessary noise or doesn’t stay together well, so opted to build my own.
A bed design plan kept popping on my Instagram. I liked the idea, but the execution and design weren’t quite right. I modified the design and made it my own. After a trip to lumberyard for some 6x6’s a couple 2x12’s and a 4x4, I grabbed my circular saw and put it work. This whole project was completed with my 6 1/2” circular saw, a Pull saw, a couple of drills, a square and a chisel. It was a lot fun using minimal tools to get this put together.
I wanted somewhat of a worn finished look. I cleaned up the lumber with a pretty rough sand, leaving some rough areas and saw marks, but eliminating sharp edges and splintering. I applied a gray stain and once it dried I took a pass with my cabinet scrapers to expose some raw areas of the grain where the stain didn’t absorb as much. I followed up with a glossy clear coat and screwed the whole thing together using large lag screws as decorative hardware.
The lumber I used is what my friend like to call semi-KD. The supplier sells and markets it as Kiln Dried lumber, but stores it outside in open air uncovered storage where it’s wide open to the elements of wet coastal weather, hence “semi-KD.” Once brought indoors, it did exactly what I anticipated and created some great long split’s and cracks as the wood completely dried out. I’m missing photos of these cracks, I’ll update later when I can reshoot.
Later on I added a floating table/open cabinet to each side. I’ll have to upload a photo later.
As I’m currently homeless, again, lol, I’m offering this for sale. Price is open for negotiation, or if you have another design idea, let’s collaborate and make something fun!
